Bass effect...

havent played it before, but i usually prefer single pedals.. -)

what sorta music are you getting into?

hmmmm.. i'd recommend an eq pedal to further shape the sound, for rock, you might wanna look for an overdrive pedal of sorts that gives you that extra grunt when you want it. and i always like abit of that delay sometimes, but that's not really necessary.

classic pedal combinations are an octaver and maybe an envelope filter..

basically bass guitars don't really need effects. Usually bass tones are quite versatile in that sense if you know how to vary your strength, your playing area and if you have two pickups to vary your pickup blend.

i think we have to understand the role of the bass guitar in a band before we move on to effects.

punk rock.. well, most of the time u dont need efx. there are instances where flanger and overdrive are used but mainly clean. sometimes the use of a pick when driving hard makes the tone sound overdriven.
