But most of his pieces are self-composed, rather than actual pieces from the baroque/romantic/classical era....

Paul Gilbert did some covers on music from those eras in his Guitar from Mars DVD...not quite sure whether the name of d DVD is correct ornt...Well, Yngwie composed in Baroque style but i dun think he played music from those eras...playing classical era music n composing is quite diff...mayb once in a blue moon...

If I'm remember correctly, Alexi Laiho did some covers b4...so does Jason Becker with his infamous cover of Caprice No.5...

The only real valid candidate will be Chris Broderick haha....i noe now he's famous but this guy can really play classical guitar...well d good old blackmore is actually more towards renaissance period...not exactly baroque...

To play pieces from those era, you prob mean classical guitar style? Using at least your right thumb and 3 right fingers.
I have not seen malmsteen doing that though he have composed classical style pieces in his music. I guess he prob can.. anyway, romanz de amor is from those era and its such a simple piece so any guitarist can play it.

However, if you mean players who play those music but in electric guitar style (pick only), I guess there are tons...malmsteen played "Flight of the Bumblebee(without effects unlike Nuno's version), "Caprice no.5", one of vivaldi's four seasons, etc... as you can tell, I am/was a big Malmsteen fan

A wee bit OT but I think Liona Boyd should be heard and seen to be believed. One of classical guitar's all-time greats. ALmost perfect definition from both sets of fingers. Her playing is almost always flawless.
