Does anyone know what are the snares available in the market that are equipped with wood hoops?

I did some research and found:

Yamaha Anton Fig Signature
Yamaha Akira Jimbo Signature
Yamaha Steve Gadd Signature
Yamaha Elvin Jones Signature
PDP SX 5.5x14" with Wood Hoops and Tube Lugs
Taye Wood Hoop Snare Drums series
*Peace SD-522MP
*Ayotte
*Metro Drums

Are there more?

And anyone seen any of the above mentioned for sale in shops in Singapore?

i just bought a gibralter wood hoop at yamaha and smacked it on my snare.

yo bro blurred, what kinda wood hoop snares u could get there??? ayotte's just too expensive lah..

I shall go check out the Gibralter hoops and see how much they cost.

I checked out Metro Drums on their MySpace. They have some really, really GREAT looking wood hoops snares!

And thanks smildrumez! I saw the Peace wood hoops snare on the site. Will add to my list. :D

Took me a while to sieve through the posts and caught the make of Frummer's wood hoop snare.

It's a...

14" x 5.5" Peace Paragon Maple Snare in Antique Tobacco Gloss

Am I right? :P

So it's safe to say, wood hoops is rather a Yamaha thing (seeing that they have more readily available signature models than say custom drums)?

Frummer, what does the wood hoop sound like? More wood sound? Dry? Loud rim shot somehow?

Share share! :)

I'm not that great at describing sounds...sorry

I like the side sticks alot...especially if i invert the stick...dang nice sound.

It sounds great...when i rimshot, it's got that fat sound...and i don't really need to use alot of force either.

oh yeah i guess the hoops do dry out the sound abit...kinda cool...elimnates excessive use of moongel.

my hoops are not dented yet nor chipped. abit of discolouring at the rimshot contact point though.

The thing i like about purchasing a peace product, is the choice of finish...it's really up to you! Mine's not a really a custom. It's a SD-522MPN ( just in a different finish )

i've ordered a 13-inch, 8 lug vintage maple hoop from yamaha via ishibashi, its intended for a yamaha musashi oak custom 13"x6.5 snare

it will probably be similar in sound to

steve jordan 13x6.5 maple /w same 13 inch/8 lug hoops

and perhaps

akira jimbo 13x7 beech /w 13 inch/6 lug hoops

compared to above 2, i wanted a bit more attack and a different sound to try out (let's see what i end up with)

wood hoops give a warmer side stick tone.

but i wldn't say it suffers from less cutting tone or less ring. it just sounds different. jimbo snare sounds very interesting and it can really ring like a metal snare if u hit the right spots.

one of my big regrets is too late to start buying gear, i wish i can get the yamaha bamboo snare...

Oh! The whole chipping factor is what I am looking for. Haha! I was jamming at Guitar 77 for the first time the other day (saw your name card, Alfe!) and their bass drum hoop is chipping! AND I LOVE IT. I mean, I just adore the whole "organic" side of it. Something along the lines of...like it's wood, it's supposed to chip and be raw. Personally, I don't like glossy, lacquer or wrap finish. The "woodier" it is, the more I like it.

Maybe I am not explaining it well. I don't mean to have a drum, throw it around, not take care of it and purposely let it chip. I am also not looking for weak wood rims that fall apart after a couple of ferocious rim hits. It's like how some guitartists have their guitars worn out at the parts where they rest their strumming arms, or at the part of the neck where they played the most chords, you know? Me like! The instrument has been played very frequently and it shows. One thing I learnt from the ex-guitarist of Sum41 is that, your instrument is supposed to be played, not polished or looked at. I mean, of course you should take good care of your gear but not to the extent of being too protective about it.

Okay, I'm probably going too much into it. LOL.

Thanks Frummer! It's good description enough. Hehe!

blurred, I am considering! But I just ordered another Craviotto walnut snare and $$$ is tight at the moment. Though, the "brick" snare looks tempting leh! Dang. I need to win TOTO.

weckl-x, let me PM you and enquire about the price. :)

plainsman, what is ishibashi??? Do you have a rough pricing? How long do you have to wait for it to arrive?

yamaha should stock the 14-inch 10 lugs and 13-inch 6 lugs. it should be about 10-15K yen (s$130-180)

i had a particular request for 13-inch 8 lugs which had to be custom made. i paid 16k for it (about $200)

shipping for the hoops is additional 2k yen ($26)
