Audio Interface options

Hi,
Any opinions regarding the Yamaha MW 12 mixing studio, Lexicon Omega or any others would be appreciated. How does this approach compare with a stand alone sound card. Where can I can such itemsin Singapore?

well, dedicated audio interfaces have 1/4" mono and XLR input jacks so that u can plug in your instruments easily without the use of 1/4"-1/8" adapters and u can plug in your mics easily.

a standalone soundcard like those from creative are more suited for listening/gaming purposes. it isn't that meant for recording. It also doesnt not have dedicated mono outputs for left/right channel 1/4" cables for monitor use.

lexicon omega and such are soundcard with firewire/usb protocol to connect with computer, it's simple connection without hassle opening your computer case etc. most of them have input and output in 1/4' for instrument and XLR for microphone since most of them has mic preamp built in. this unit has dedicated monitor/volume control and headphones output. input and input ranging from 2 I/O with digital I/O and sometimes midi i/o also.

the other version is PCI based soundcard (if that what you meant with stand alone soundcard). it's PCI based to connect to computer. some of the has breakout box for input and output but sometimes has I/O directly on those card just like ECHO MIA MIDI. some high end models has breakout cables with DB25 format just like Lynx audio card, RME and such. same thing with protools HD version. to connect their HD card to I/O (converter) used DB25 format.

OK, mixcubed and Z3r0_G. Thanks for your replies and explanations.

Has any seen the Yamaha MW12 Mixing Studio for sale in Singapore? If so, I'd like to know where?

bok: The Yamaha MW12 should be available at Yamaha Music, Plaza Singapura Branch, within the section with all the guitar stuff.

You may also want to hop over to Sinamex at Parklane (2 bus stops away from PS) to check out other options from M-Audio, Alesis, etc.
