Any Good Songwriting / Composition Teachers to Recommend?

Have piano background and very keen to improve on my songwriting skills. Any recommendation?

Thanks.

do check out the book called "The complete idiot's guide to songwriting" in Borders. It's really a good book on songwriting though it sounds somewhat insulting.

Just to clarify in case you think this is sarcasm, i own 3 copies from the "Idiots guide" series of books myself which i find highly beneficial.

learn urself =p..

jk..

just write more and more and you will improve, be patient. Songwriting skills cannot be improved overnight. Write songs, let ur frens ( especially those who knows music ) listen. Then, they will point out certain issues or give u certain pointers on what's nicer etc. Thats how i improve on my songwriting skills ,i don depend on teacher or books ;).. Although i learn theory and stuff but they don really teach me much!

isnt Berkley a University in the US? lol.. oops i think its Berk lee music college, how are u guys related to them?

If u are willin to fork out $200+ every month, u can try the Lee Weisong School of Music at Sommerset.

i am a student learning composing there myself. It really has not much of use to be YET because the first year is just sing and play, but u will get to write some stuff. The next year is the year u get to write full songs.

My friend use to learn there, he says u really learn a lot, and is very good in building a solid foundation, but the thing is that the course is too draggy for his liking and he gave up.

I second this. Also analyse the songs that you like. Really analyse, not just listen. A 2nd/3rd/4th opinion is very important because a song is your own baby - you'll never say that your baby is ugly ;)
Theory will help for sure, though. Keep writing and you'll improve.

Theres a chick..her nickname is Mary - Jane. She will give you all the song writing techniques you will need.

Erm, i have piano background until Grade 8, but so far I am unable to write anything good. I can come up with the simple melodies but am unable to fit in lyrics and accompaniments. All my works sound kiddish to me!

Does a music school really help? And if I go for the song-writing course, wont I be wasting time going through the 1st year if it just teaches theory?

Thanks for all the advises! Appreciate it.

haha.. then i think you should do your own stuff and improve by ur own. Im only grade 5 and i can come up with something that my frens/families likes, even ppl from the internet. Just keep practicing, theres no way u gona find a teacher thats gona teach u how to cr8 l337 melodies and stuff, since u already got THE BEST BASICS( grade 8 ), it's ur creativity now ;)..
