He's looking for funk guitarists. Morello's riffs are basically Black Sabbath's sludgish riffs with a Led Zep groove.
James Brown is still da bomb. His sessionists are amazing. "Sex Machine Part 2" and "Hot Pants"
Curtis Mayfield is amazing as a player and singer. Key songs: "Freddie's Dead", "Pusherman" and "Move On Up".
Issac Hayes played with the best. For some classic wah work-outs: "Theme from Shaft"
Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" and "Inner City Blues"
Something more modern.
Prince's 'Musicology' album is a return to form with slabs of funk lifting from the classics, your James Brown, Al Green, etc.
Maxwell works with Stuart Matthewman who is Sade's guitarist. Amazing player. His ideas are very interesting in the scope of modern R'n'B. If you are interested.
The Roots. Well, they are a live hip-hop band but then again, hip hop has roots in funk.
Have fun...
