let say i have a budget of 500 for a pair of active monitors
what do you guys recommend?

rp5's are good for their price range. think its the best in that price range in fact. the others hovering in that range could be your yamaha MSP3, M-Audio BX5, Samson Resolvs. But having heard all, think the RP5 still above the competition. MSP3 actually a close second, but i find it has a tad too much high end. imho la. cheers

i've one pair in my studio but imho, i think is good for tv mix. i just find that the low end is uncontrollable. :) but overall, $500+ for a pair of actice monitor. good deals...

what about mixing bass n guitars?
n drums etc?
ahaha

by the way

i plugged my distortion pedal straight into my sound card
it doesnt sound nice
i think it clips badly
do i need a DI box?

rp5 seems to have a little less definition on the low end. seems floppy to me. but anyways, any monitors u buy, be it KRK or Genelecs, you gotta "learn" your monitors. keep listening to ur cds on it, and soon u'll get the hang of it. guess for "good" monitors, u can hear subtleties alot better. but i guess alot of factors come into play, including ur room acoustics etc.
currently, i am using headphones to mix. sony 7506. good enuff. my mixes aren't pro, but they ain't that bad either. listenable. keke.
i came close to buyign the rp5, but decided against it in the end.

if clip badly, then ya, maybe DI will help. what soundcard u have? i used to record thru a creative live! value card. hehe. worked for me for awhile at least. till it died. :)

im using a emu 1212m sound card
haha

it has TRS balanced inputs and outputs though

it doesnt work with my current speakers despite using an adaptor
30dollars creative speakers
haha
so i was wondering what monitors should i get to compliment this great sound card
after all it doesnt really justify it uses playing a 30 dollars speaker thru a 300 dollars sound card

i have a budget for 500

by the way is behringer DI box usable?
heard bad things about the brand though

i saw this DI box retailing at 55 dollars

very true, you need to learn your monitor no matter what. room acoustic and all other things play a big part too. :) NS10 is my official ear tuned monitor. :p use to the sound on that monitor. genelec is good but when i mix rock music, prefer to stick with my NS10m. can't go way wrong on that pairs of yamaha sweeties. :)

hey bernard, regarding the NS10M, must be old pair? out of production? legendary stuff tho. heard some put a single ply tissue covering the tweeter to reduce the highs, that true?

emu1212M, good stuff. using the digidesign ad/da apparently? that true too? cool. wanted to get those but stuck with echo mia midi. heh.
anyways, behringer DI - usable. like i tell some folks, behringer products is a "heng sway" thing. u heng, ur product will last u a while lor. :)

for $500, get the RP5's, top up another $5 and get ur DI. ta dah. ur ready to rock bro. dun forget to post up some good stuff..:)

question
when i record sitting close to the monitor

with the distortion pedal plugged direct into the soundcard

the guitar picks up noise frm the monitor

would the DI box reduce this hum/noise?

don't think so.

with single coils, the hum is louder. with humbuckers, its much better. what you do is angle ur body/guitar in a certain way to get rid of the hum. you gotta find the "sweet spot". thash what i did.

dun think there's anything u can do about it. for me, i just turn 180 deg away whenever i hit the record button..keke.

hmmm i got myself a set of dimarzio noiseless single coils.. its completely silent ... but the lace sensor holygrail was really by far the quietest pickups..but output was very low.
