Amp to Computer (Home Recording)

I tried connecting my amp to my soundcard of my computer, using some Cakewalk software and the sound that comes out of the speaker when I play the guitar didn't even reach to the standard sound, very muffled and untidy distortion.
So my purpose for this post, is to find out from those who did home recording, what soundcard do they use, what software do they use to record their riffs/licks, and some additional points that I should take note when doing home recording.
Your help and advices are much appreciated.

Guitars or mics -> Presonus Firepod -> Apple 12" Powerbook with Cubase LE and Audio-Technica ATH-M30s for monitoring.

Try recording at a lower level (enough to get your dynamics in) and bumping up the overall volume later because your soundcard may not be able to take the hot signal coming from your amp. Gives you the added advantage of having more dynamic range to play with if you happen to want to master your own stuff as well.

I have a crappy SB live! 5.1 card and ibanez amp. My distortion sound very tinny and trashy.

I cant use and modeeling programs becuase my soundcard doesnt have a low altency and tis very laggy.

Umm what i do is to connect guitar amp, amp's line out to soundcard line in. Either u jack ur amp's line out to the soundcard's mike input, or ur line out from ur amp is faulty like one of my other amp in the house.

Soundcard used is a v v old SB audigy 1.

Software ... umm might run into some piracy issues so better dun mention haha.

Ya recording at a low level is recommended. Maybe u can even try recording it clean first then add in distortion later.
