Hi thanks all for the awesome advice given for how I should start learning the electric guitar. I am starting lessons really soon this weekend, and I was thinking I would like to get a guitar and amp to practice. My budget is about 1k in all for guitar + amp. I am v. into rock and metal genre of songs, although my friends want to rope me in to play indie, pop for their band in the future.

Any advice on what model of guitar and amp i should be getting for a total budget of 1k? Thanks alot!!

that's a good budget to start with. i'm not one to state a specific guitar/ amp for you to consider but rather a list for you to choose from.

Guitar
seems like you are employing lots of distortion in your playing, you'd do well to check out these humbucking guitars:

*Epiphone- LP Std Plain/ Flame top
*Squier Vintage Mod- Custom II
*Ibanez- RG321/ ART/ ARX/ SA120
*Yamaha- Pac 121
*LTD- 50-series (M/ Eclipse/ Viper)
*Cort- Katana

Amps
if you wish for on-board FX, Roland's CUBE amps/ VOX DA5 are good considerations

other amps for you to consider:
*Marshall MG15
*Ibanez TBX30R
*Kustom DART10FX

I'd also look at a good MFX like a POD or GT6/GT8. That will give you a lot more options, especially if you want to perform live. Forget stomp boxes until you have more cash to blow. For the price of a MFX, you can't get the same optionality in stomps.

Still, if you're only gonna play metal, then you probably only need one or two stomp boxes, but this will limit your choices in the future.
