hey i just stumbled upon soft today, and i think it's an awesome forum :)

i'm taking my A's this year, and i'm thinking of finally getting an electric to spend my last month before NS. it'll be my first, and i'm definitely wanting to go for a les paul because slash is my number 1 influence. do you have any advice for a guy with a $300 to $400 budget? that's just for a guitar and pickups, because my friend's kindly offered to donate his amp.

thanks in advance!:D

New electric guitar.

Hey there. With a budget of 300-400,you can get a nice Ibanez GRX20JB or a Schecter Omen, but what i'd really suggest is that you save up a bit more and get a really good guitar, like a Les Paul, but that costs a bomb,so maybe you can save up to around 700 to 800+,and get a good guitar after you come out from NS.Don't get a starter pack or anything, because in my opinion you'd want a better guitar later on and will have a bit of a problem off-loading the starter guitar,it's not a bestseller. Also, you might want to get a Floyd Rose guitar,to save yourself the trouble of getting one later on,as many of my friends regretted getting a guitar without Floyd Rose,me included. All that said,i'd recommend the two guitars i've mentioned, although act fast as the Omen is almost sold out,and pick-ups wise,i think that you'd wanna save the money for the pick-ups and get a distortion pedal or something.Hope this helps you.

First, Slash doesn't use a FR-type guitar! He literally bends the guitar neck to achieve that sound (I assume being the fan you are, you should know this.)

Second, FR-type guitars for a beginner like you will kill interest (changing strings are #$@^#$%)

If you're really interested, Standard Value sells Rally Guitars. They're Les Paul shaped (originally the factory for making epiphones), and they're decently priced. http://standardvalue.com.sg/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=378

As for the amplifier, you can also seek help from the people at Standard Value, or you can give this a go. http://theguitaraddict.blogspot.com/2008/10/randall-ninja-combo.html

hey thanks all for replying! for a rookie like me, are there any major differences between an original les paul and a cheaper les paul-shaped guitar? and how much would a decent mid-range former cost?

a cheaper les paul may be thinner, lighter and has a bolt on neck, instead of a set neck. so a cheaper les paul will have less sustain and resonation than a high end les paul. and as u like slash u should know how beautifully his les paul sustains during solos.

a decent mid range les paul can be an epiphone les paul standard. which can easily be found over here at the buy/sell section for and easy 500-600 bucks.

do save up and buy urself a decent les paul. and be sure to try other types of guitars because some ppl really just cant play les pauls. try it and see if it feels right in ur hands first.

i suggest saving some money from your NS pay. 400 dollars might get you a decent guitar (ie a rally les paul copy) but you won't have any money left to buy an amp. so save up some money from your NS pay, and use your BMT money (should be around 700 dollars+) to get a decent amp, tube or otherwise.

i'm going to NS in slightly over a month's time, so i'm saving for a nice vox or fender amp. and an acoustic guitar.

get the guitar first, leave the pickup swapping till much later when you really feel the need to refine your tone. your budget can get you this great singlecut design guitar, since you are Slash-inclined (but let not the SLASH factor get to you too much... ):
