active bass --> preamp

hey guys..does anyone play an active bass and put it thru another outboard preamp?? i mean..would it be a waste to get the outboard preamp, or the active bass in the first place??

If someone dosent know how to use either one, then both would be a waste anyway...

There are lots of people who run their active basses into preamps. This includes those that come with XLR outputs i.e. EBS Microbass, Sansamp Bass Driver, MXR M-80, Sadowsky Preamp DI and what not.

I especially like to run my Marcus Miller Jazz through the Sadowsky, simply because the sound KILLS.

same. my yammy bb1500 may have bass and treble knobs and even a blend between neck and bridge pickups.. but sometimes i still dial in certain parameters on my m-80 to take it to the next level. it really is in your ears and what you're trying to achieve. no hard and fast rule..

bro,does it alter the sound?coz i read some comments on sadowsky outboard preamp couple of days ago,they guy said that he always run his non-sadowsky bass through the preamp,to get that 'sadowsky' sound...

It really depends on how the preamp works. Some are so "powerful" that they allow you to modify the tone to the point where the bass sounds more like the preamp. Then there are those which only enhance the tone of your bass so that it keeps its tonal characteristics.

Its really a matter of transparency. As far as I can tell, the Sadowsky dosen't compress the signal much, but only adds that coveted top-end which is really sophisticated and pleasant to the ears, it also smooths out any bass which passes through it. I tried P basses, Jazzes, actives...all with the same results. But I'll maintain that the Sadowsky is trasparent yet adds those qualities to whatever basses that go thru it.
