Hi, i need a second opinion on the protege acoustic guitars at maestro. im thinking of getting one because its relatively cheap, below 200, and it feels and sound pretty decent. but i cant find any other information on this guitar online. opinions from guys who've tried it or owned it?

Maestro's products varies even for the same series(Well...most of other guitars do too...)

So you can't really rely on opinion of others...If you think that it's decent, and someone who is an expert is with you and agreeing....get that exact unit....

Those guitars are fantastic for their price. Seriously very good. I've tried a whole lot of them and have recommended a few of my friends to get it because it is ideal for people who don't have more than $200 to spend on a guitar.

Just take note of the set up. see if the neck is straight and the action is alright.

Masetro guitars are pretty sounding and nicely built , I've played quite a number and I'm pretty satisfied. But you'll have to play a few to choose the best tone. If you're open to other brands, you can try out Yamaha and Swing guitars. Similar specs but Maestro has better finishes.

All the best ! (:

My experiences with Maestro are quite different. A friend of mine has a mid-level Maestro (ED-2 I think) and it has a build problem resulting in bad intonation on the higher frets. And frankly it didn't sound very good. Sounded rather 'off'. Another Maestro I tried had glue stains pretty much everywhere, even though it did sound very good. Maestros aren't bad. There are excellent ones. But I think the quality control is quite inconsistent.

The TS was asking about the brand of guitars called Protege that are carried by Maestro, not Maestro guitars themselves. However, I have to agree with EugeneSmasher on the "build problem". there is a metal plate under the bridge that is there to improve sustain but because of the lack of contact between the bridge and the body, the bridge has a tendency to come off. I owned a Maestro guitar with that problem.

To remedy that problem, the metal plate had to be removed and the bridge had to be leveled and reglued back. Maestro guitars don't sound bad but it's more of the build quality that I'm concerned about.
