I learn music by chords. The different characters of major/minor chords, 7s etc.
What I would do is play those chords clean and record them. Does not have to be in any order or does it have to make any sense. Remember to write an answer sheet and refer to it only when you give up.
After recording, identify those chords by guessing them by their "character" even in different keys.
Try it.
He's right! 1 thing you should take note is that you should find out the key of the song that you're trying to figure out. (that's where practice of your scales comes in!)
The maj chords that was mentioned is made up of 1 3 5 of the key.
eg C major Key
C D E F G A B C
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 i
If you got a keyboard, you will find that these are the white keys.
So, playing any white key will 'sound right' and 'fitting' to most parts of any song in C Key. While playing some black keys, like the 5b or 3b will somewhat make it sounds 'blue' That'll add some bass to your song.
I think the 'character' means what each note sounds relative to each other.
a 3rd note will always sound 'do - mi'
a 5th note will always sound 'do - so'
a 7th note will always sound 'do - ti'
even for different keys!
If you hear a do so so mi, means that it is 1 5 5 3, notes C G G E
try to remember how each interval sounds, and you are on your way to create nice bass lines!
