Says Joseph:
"This talk is an attempt to trace the growth of the Singapore pop
music scene back in the sixties. It covers only one decade because in
terms of achievements that is the greatest decade of music where
Singapore is concerned.

It begins with the Cliff Richard and The Shadows concert of November
1961 which opened the floodgates of Singapore Sixties music. Within a
short period the island was inundated with bands in the three main
language streams of Singapore. Malay, English and Chinese. There were
Indian music parties but since they tended to cover movie based songs it
falls outside the scope of this talk but will be touched on briefly [as
well as] the bands that formed in the early sixties period and their
growth.

Next year the Beatles broke through in England and that unleashed
another wave of bands that were influenced by the growth of the Beatles
and the bands that came in their wake. Whilst the early bands were
influenced by artistes like the Shadows, Cliff Richard and Johnny Lion
and The Jumping Jewels of Holland, the advent of the Beatles presented
new challenges. The singers in the bands had to be instrumentalists and
vice versa. This presented a new challenge and parameters to the
musicians in Singapore. You had to be able to sing and play….1962
was significant for that year Cresecendos powered by Susan Lim were
signed to Philips and their first two single releases were No 1 hits in
Singapore and Malaysia."
