Hey guys...I heard about the 18volt mod for EMG pickups and I was wondering if any of you have tried it or heard the before and after of the mod...

I might want to try it on my 81 and 85, because I hear it gives more headroom and opens up the sound of the pickup quite alot...

What do you guys think?

personal observation is that the difference is not that great.

You can do it with 3 9-volt battery jacks
just wire them together in series
plug one to the existing jack in your body
and fill the other 2 with 9 volt batt
if not happy
can easily revert back to one batt

well it might be dangerous that time i mod my pedal to 18v when is suppose to run on 7.5v adaptor the adaptor exploded unbelievably and not the pedal

Ohh...Interesting...I also heard that the sound is not as compressed as the normal 9v EMGs...

But what do you guys think about the sound after the mod?

Also, what is headroom exactly? I think its the amount of space in the volume before the signal breaks up...But what does what mean technically? Im quite bad at these 'technical' terms...So i need your help...Hahaha...

More headroom and a fuller sound. Not as compressed. I'm using 18v on my EMG's as well. The difference between 9v ~ 18v is quite significant but the difference between 18v ~ 27v can hardly be heard.

Mine was more of an add-on rather then a mod. So if I decide to go back to 9v, I can just remove the extension. I also notice that using 18v batteries last a bit longer then 2 9v batteries.

Me gives 2 thumbs up for the 18v mod. If you're skeptical on the mod, you can always go passive so you'll save up on batteries and no worries on whether the power is dying out or if your sound is a bit compressed or whatever

So, the pickups after the mod sounds passive? Haha...I don't want that to happen...I love the fiery sound of EMGs...

haha, it wont la..just that without the mod, u will get that awesome nasal metal tone that metalheads like.. but with the mod it justs becomes more open with lesser nasal tone.. why not check out the seymour blackouts bro..
