Mosaic Music Festival 2010
11th hr - Vashti Bunyan
19 Mar 2010, Fri, 11pm
Esplanade Concert Hall
$40, $60
FOLK COMEBACK YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS!
It’s one of music’s most unlikely comebacks, and you can be part of history-in-the-making.
As pop mythologies go, Vashti Bunyan ranks as one of the most compelling. An English hippie-folk chanteuse who released an ignored first album back in 1970 and was almost destined to be a mere footnote, she’s miraculously rediscovered by a new tribe of great, diverse artists. That record, Just Another Diamond Day, produced by Nick Drake producer Joe Boyd, slowly built its reputation as a lost classic waiting to be unearthed – until the 21st century.
Her growing legion of followers are impressive enough. Psych-folk hero Devendra Banhart, as an unknown, wrote to her for music advice. Experimental rockers Animal Collective collaborated with her. Rising harpist-singer Joanna Newsom, British artist Adem, as well as Banhart paid their dues by appearing in her second album, 2005’s exquisite Lookaftering. Most recently, acclaimed Swedish artist Fever Ray covers her song Here Before into a brilliantly moody electro gem.
The accolades are testament to a very special icon who follows her own pastoral muse and never bends to time or tide. Bunyan’s sublime artistry, ahead of the curve and subsequently not part of it, has to be heard live at the 11th hour – she seems to fly above the din, delivering her wise, spectral songs of innocence and experience.
You will be spellbound.
60mins, no intermission
