O.P.E.N. Concert - Perhat Khaliq & Qetiq @ Victoria Theatre
23, 24 June
8pm

With his distinctive raspy voice, it’s easy to see why Uyghur singer, composer and guitar player Perhat Khaliq and his rock band Qetiq have garnered such a furious following around the world. Founded in 2006, the band’s contemporary interpretation of traditional Uyghur and Kazakh music are a rarity in music today: overtone singing meets country music, old desert songs crossed with rock and funk.

Born in the remote Autonomous Uyghur Province of Xinjiang in North-western China, Perhat taught himself to play the guitar at the age of six. He became a musician, playing at local bars in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, with his band Qetiq, which he founded in 2006. After a European music promoter talent-spotted them, Perhat and Qetiq also played at music festivals and concerts in Germany.

It was only in 2014 that he turned into a major star in his homeland, after auditioning for the reality show “The Voice of China”. His powerful vocals and emotionally charged performances wowed the judges and millions of viewers nation-wide. In the process, he has also helped to change the perception of China’s minority Uyghur community.

In September last year, Perhat and the Morgenland All Star Band hit the road on their first China tour of 22 major cities in 40 days. Three months later, Perhat received the prestigious Prince Claus Award for “breathing new life into traditional Uyghur forms”. Together, he and Qetiq have also released their first CD, the Uyghur-language album “Qetiq – Rock From Taklaman Desert”, and are working on their next record.

At The O.P.E.N., Perhat and Qetiq will bring their firebrand music to the stage in an electrifying performance for the first time in South-east Asia. Prepare to have your socks knocked off!
