Looking for musically broad-minded weekend warriors

Hello SOFTies,

Warning – this message is long. I don’t have much of my own time to waste, and I don’t want to waste anybody elses… so if you’re looking for someone with a flexible schedule who’s up for anything, please skip this post. If you are serious about making the most out of the precious commodity called time, then please read on.

I’m looking for some people to get together with to jam, make music, and generally
have a good time. However, due to my work commitments, I have very limited availability, and because I don’t want to waste anybody’s time (or my own), here’s the sort of thing I’m interested in.
If you happen to be on the same page, drop me a line and we’ll definitely work something out, but if it’s not what you’re looking for in a band mate then it’s probably best to keep looking

Covers

I’d like to play some covers, because I enjoy playing covers. There’s nothing that I won’t play, but here are some examples of things that I want (i.e. if NONE of this interests you, we’re probably not going to get alone well)

Dream Theater, Metallica, Megadeth, Opeth, Shpongle, Infected Mushroom, Muse, Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Deep Purple, Bon Jovi, Pat Metheny, Dimmu Borgir, Aeon Spoke, Ratatat, Younger Brother, Ulver, Cake, Rammstein, DJ Krush, A Perfect Circle, Arcturus

This list is indicative only, not exclusive. If you’d like to try a Britney Spears song, I won't say no, as long as there’s a good balance of other things. Generally speaking, I like a broad cross-section of music, and I DO want to play a little of everything… if
you’re not up for that, then I’m probably not the person you’re looking for.

Originals
I am an appalling lyricist, and without my guitar, I am useless. So if you can sing, or can play any instrument, or write lyrics (in English), and would be interested in writing original material that may or not resemble things on the list up there, then there’s a good chance we’ll get along swimmingly. I am especially interested in working with keyboardists/pianists/electronic musicians/ethnic instrumentalists/anything else that is non-conventional… although such people
are in short supply.

For originals, the primary goal is to write, perform and record material. I am able to record vocals, guitars and keyboards in a rudimentary fashion on Pro Tools and accompanying hardware. Drum sequencing is also not a problem. If we can put together enough material to go into the studio and bang something out, I’m game (for putting my own money on the table as well!).

The only caveat is that I would like to have a good balance of originals and covers. The primary reason is that I am unable to commit to writing originals all year round as my work commitments are seasonal. At those points in time however, I would very much like to continue jamming (hence, covers!).

Commitment
I can ONLY commit to a jam/songwriting once a forthnight on Saturday, preferably in the late morning/early afternoon. Unless there is an upcoming gig, or it’s a lull period for me at work, no other time is convenient. During quiet periods I will gladly
make that once a week, but converse during particuarly busy periods, I may have to skip one...

Gigs
Not a requirement, but if the chemistry is good and it’s all coming together quickly, I’m happy to play gigs, but am not interested in playing for money. It would be strictly gigs that are enjoyable to play.

About you
You are a drummer, a keyboardist, a singer, a guitar, a bassist, etc… You are preferably a working adult who has limited time to spare but doesn’t want to give up the dreams and passions of making music that you’ve harboured over the years. You’ve been playing awhile, perhaps on and off, but you’ve had difficulty finding the right group of people to play with because they’re either expect too much or too
little. You would like to have fun, but realize that sometimes having fun means PLANNING for it, otherwise it will elude you.

Or maybe you’re just really bored.

About me
I’ve been playing guitar for about 15 years. I grew up listening to a lot of heavy metal, then I tried to play blues and jazz, realized that I couldn’t and went back to playing heavy metal. These days, I dabble in anything from electronica and trip hop to fusion and old school thrash. I can’t read music, but I can follow chord charts quite comfortably. If it’s a jazz piece, I might need about 10 mins on my own to muck around a bit… but I’ll get there. I’m not much of an improvisor (when it comes to soloing), but I can bluff my way through a song if necessary. I much prefer to agree beforehand on what will be played, but winging it every now and then is permissible (and sometimes fun). If you ask me to play the blues, you will probably regret it.

I have had several years of experience playing in an originals band (Chinese rock). I also played on Saturday nights in a cover band in a local club for a couple of months, as well as at various corporate events (funk/smooth jazz/pop/rock/adult contemporary). I continue to play in that band, which has ad hoc gigs, and which will impact my availability (but not significantly so).

I don’t think being in a band should ever be a chore, the whole idea is to find like minded people to get together and have A GOOD TIME. If we’re not having fun, SOMETHING IS WRONG.

Here are some recent recordings I have made. It should give you a baseline of what to expect with regards to original material, covers, and my general ability (or inability) to play.

Hi adamqlw,

I love metal music, but sometimes also into other styles depends on my mood.
And also serious about music. And dont mind spending both my weedends on my passion unless i happen to be busy.

But, i happen to be a noob. And was actually hoping to get a pro and shareable guitarist friend/jamming partner to lead me, teach me.
And hoping in the end of a few years. Im able to be good enough to stand up on the same level as him.

Sorry if im actually Wasting your time as you're not interested.

Thanks

Btw: You have Good Taste for Metal Songs :D

Hey ...

I am also new to playing music, and only performed once live when a buddy who is a drummer (after a night of wisky drinking) got me stoned, put a mic in my hand and started playing .... all I could do was yell and scream ...and for some reason, probably surprise at seeing me on stage, the crowd liked it. But I am not a singer.

I play with digital synths and a sampler ... in essence, I make my own samples on a synth, and record them onto a keyboard sampler to play them which means I can have a drum rhythm going on the synth as well as uptp 4 other loops, while i play the pre recorded samples on a keyboard.... But i am still a beginner.

Heavy metal is ok .... and I am more into making original music than covers as I can't play covers with the synth and sampoles I have. But I do have a few ideas for songs .... that could be heavy metal. My influences are heavy and dark, not heavy and metal .... especially the early Killing Joke, thrashy side of Jesus and Mary chain and also trippy stuff like Portishead ....

Anyway ...can contact me on dj.f.singapore@hotmail.co.uk

Hey adamqlw,

Unlike you, I only have about 6 years of experience but believe myself to be capable of playing most of the songs you'd like to cover. I mainly cover artists such as Dream Theater, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Racer X, Avenged Sevenfold and other similar bands. I very much like to play progressive rock and metal but do got the Blues from time to time. Apart from electric guitar, I like playing stuff from tommy emmanuel and Rodgrio y Gabriela.

For originals, I'm heading towards a more Porcupine Tree / Alter Bridge type of sound. Have started recording some riffs and ideas as and when they have arosed.

I like to gig and perform and am currently embarking on a project with a fellow musician. But I'm interested in finding out what you have in mind. Do contact me at darrelltancl@gmail.com
