About Museum of Independent Music [taken from their Facebook page]

“Music, one of the most powerful art form in existence. Many things come and go, yet some are worth keeping. Here, we focus on conservation of contents and aim to preserve efforts made in promoting local music. With the establishment of the Museum of Independent Music, the first of its kind in the country, we are able to educate visitors about the history and continuing social significance of independent music and its subculture in Singapore.

The practice of the museum is not only limited to the collection, preservation, and showcase of exhibits, but also to interpret this art form with the museums’ library, publications and archives, as well as its educational programs that would help to support these efforts. The museum will be a gathering point for all local music enthusiasts where creative juices will flow from one to another, that would in turn help inspire the masses. Touring artists from around the world who come to visit are also able to know more about the local music scene in a much broader sense within a structured manner.

The museum also reflects on how independent initiatives have contributed to the development of modern Singapore and how it affects the community and culture. As such, the museum hopes to instill to its visitors the importance of supporting local music and that it is crucial to the upbringing and formation of our social identity. It also highlights different aspects of artistic freedom in music through the eyes of artists and fans alike and offers insights to the treasure trove of historical information on local music hidden away in inhospitable avenues and how it struggles to receive recognition from the general public.

Singapore is rich with multi-talented musicians from various cultural backgrounds and that is what makes it unique. While the hype is on, lets not let it fade and die as history might eventually repeat itself. Lets embrace what we have and hold on to it for generations to come.”
