Scales and Stuff

Hi Edmund,

For Jazz you basically need a complete understanding of the scales/modes and also chord formation theory.

i.e. Must be able to do G major scale, etc anywhere on the fretboard.

Chord formation: 1-3-5 is a major chord, 1-3-5-7 is a major7 chord.

When you have grasp these two things, then only you can really start playing Jazz.

Jazz is also split into a lot of different genres of Jazz. So it really depends which genre you wanna specialise in. i.e. Acid Jazz, Swing, etc.

how many kinds of genre are there?? the kind of jazz i wanna play is... abit of blues in it.. something like what u can always hear in hotel lounge with pianos... any idea?

Swing

That's most probably Swing you are talking about.

Well, to find out the different genres of Jazz, you could go to music stores and buy one of every kind. *smile*. And find out which type you like best.

Swing Jazz

Nope. Can't really play that well. But know a lot of people who do since I work in a guitar shop heh heh. Got a lot of players come in who are Jazz players.

Re: Swing Jazz

isit? where u work? maybe buy guitar nx time can contact u??

bout swing jazz... u noe any sites or recommend any books to learn?

Cheapest way to learn how to walk (the way i did it) - just go transcribe basslines for some basic standard tunes. Of crs it'll be good to find out the chords for the whole tune to see how the bassist chooses his/her notes with respect to the chord changes.

Here are some good tunes to start with:
Autumn Leaves
Have U Met Miss Jones
Ain't Misbehavin'
Straight, No Chaser
Joy Spring
I Got Rhythm
Cherokee
Bye Bye Blackbird
Days of Wine and Roses
Night and Day

Just 10 of the more popular songs i can come up with on top of my head
U should be able to find some of this stuff off p2p programs. Just stick with it and in time, u'll find walking much more natural, provided u know ur fretboard well enuff.

Gd luck.
