An interesting blend of 20s and 30s Western swing & dixieland (think the Hot Cornets & Benny Goodman) with traditional and cha cha Shanghai music. Worthy to be given a listen.

Cheapest place to order (inclusive of shipping to outside HK) so far: www.hmv.com.hk

there's a Peace Hotel in Shanghai where they have a Jazz band with members 60 and above years of age. Got a CD of the band.

Have just realised you can find this CD exclusively at That CD Shop. Sells at $29.90, but it's apparently very well-mastered and high-quality recording. So if you have the $$$ to splurge, don't need to buy from HMV HK... Heh.

I have the CD too. Though they dun sound nice when they talk, but the female singer in there has a good smoky voice.

"Gei wo yi ge wen/keyi bu ke yi'....hahaa

That CD Shop has a whole collection of these Shanghai High Society Jazz CDs available, if anybody's looking. I always patronize the one at Pacific Plaza. Nice shop, nice-looking salesgirls....and standard CD prices. Recommended place, esp. for jazz music.

Wow ,great response here

Anyway jsut to let you guys know the CD has reached my place.

So far I've given it a first round listen and here are my impressions so far

I think its definitely great for lounge music, chillling out, watching live and all......they pretty much did their homework and covered the mainstream jazz pop sounds of dixieland to swing to 40s, 50s Betty boop-esque stuff pretty well. A fabulous made in china copy cat if I may without any intended pun. THe first track reminded if the classic 'Fever'. Rip off I say!

The album is nice but rather cliched for me. The very, very familiar progression, changes I hear from my jazzaholic days are all there. I was expecting an interesting blend of chinese and western jazz. Sure there were some but not at the rate of my expectations. Overall its more western n eastern sounding (I do not consider singing here), just the music. That doesnt mean its a bad buy (for me at least).

I was expecting an interestin revivalist music with unique, new touches to old music like Brian Setzer, Diana Krall.

But still get the CD. Not groundbreaking but worthy of being in your collection.
