Best known as the frontman of The Oddfellows and guitarist of TypeWriter, Patrick has been heavily involved with the music scene as a performer, producer, and music journalist. Inspired by the lo-fi, do-it-yourself scene, The Oddfellows have made a huge and lasting impact on local music. In 1991, their debut album Teenage Head was led by the single “So Happy”, which contained serious themes that resonated with local youth. In 2000, Patrick joined TypeWriter along with founder of The Ordinary People, Yee Chang Kang. Heavily influenced by power-pop legends Big Star, The Posies, and Weezer, the band played their first gig at Alliance Francaise in 2001. The band later roped in Desmond and Redzuan and recorded their very first album, Indian Head Massage in 2010.

This interview with Patrick Chng was made for the retrospective exhibition, So Happy: 50 Years Of Singapore Rock, held at The Substation from 8 to 26 April 2015.

So Happy: 50 Years Of Singapore Rock is a project by creative agency fFurious that is supported by the Singapore Memory Project's irememberSG Fund, The Substation, Antalis SEA and Thunder Rock School as part of the Singapore50 (SG50) Celebrations.
