Zoom G7 to computer for recording

Dear all,

I am new to guitar recording and would like to know some basic before I make some unnecessary investment. So far to what I read and understood, I need to hook up my guitar to an effects board then to a MIDI then to my PC for editing. Correct me if I am wrong on this connection.

If I am using a Zoom G7 effects board, I heard somewhere from the sales man that I do not require a MIDI. Is that true.

I will get a MIDI if it is necessary. Bros and experts kindly enlighten me. Thanks.

Re: How does it connects??

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes that's the one I have and its complicated. The instruction did mentioned I require a MIDI though. Have you tried it without a MIDI?

And yes I did hook up the board to my PC. I couldn't get any sound captured on my PC with given Cubase LE4 DAW. I must have got it wrong somewhere with the setup. I tried installing the software several times though.

Any clues bro?

Re: How does it connects??

There's no need for MIDI if you want to record the guitar via g71ut.

Are you using Windows? On the bottom right of your screen -> Right Click on the Speaker icon -> Select Recording Devices

Do you see the Zoom there?

Re: How does it connects??

Assuming you're using Windows since you mentioned PC.

- Install Cubase LE 4
- Install ASIO Drivers of the Zoom G7
http://www.zoom.co.jp/english//download/software/g71ut.php#c
Refer to your OS etc.
- plug your guitar > zoom G7 > USB cable (I believe it's not provided with box) > into your PC.
- In Cubase > Devices > Device Setup > VST Audio Bay (Or somewhere around there) select Zoom G7's.
- Plug your speakers into the OUTPUT (you may require adapters depending on the speakers jack) of your Zoom G7.
- from now on, your "Soundcard" = Zoom G7 , unless you chose your onboard soundcard's under Control Panel
- In Cubase LE4 , press F4 (or Devices > VST Connections) , configure your INPUT of the Zoom G7 properly, usually 1 mono if not 1 Stereo if the zoom G7 supports stereo. This may be complicated ,but if you don't understand try Youtube search "Configuring Cubase LE 4 VST Connections" etc. I'm sure you'll find something.
- now while you're still configuring VST Connections, make sure you configure your OUTPUT, and it's usually Add Bus > Stereo > and these are the outputs of your Zoom G7.

- Start new session/project , Add Audio track (Mono or Stereo depending on your INPUT configuration). you'll see a Red Record button or a yellow speaker button beside. when the "YELLOW SPEAKER" is enabled, you monitor the input of your Zoom G7 and you should be able to hear your playing (This is the part which you set the volume levels on your zoom make sure it does not clip/overload). when the "RED RECORD" is enabled, it's armed ready to record. then just press the "Record" button on the Transport bar above. and you should be well recording.

MIDI from what I quick browsed, is mainly for FIRMWARE UPDATE (think of it as iPhone iOS6 to iOS7 / Windows XP to Windows 7 etc) update.
http://www.zoom.co.jp/english//download/software/g71ut.php#a
You'll require a USB MIDI Interface like this one which I have, http://m-audio.com/products/en_us/Uno.html
example : Zoom G7 > MIDI Plugged > MAudio MIDI Interface > USB > PC. and do your update thing.

MIDI can be used to control your Zoom G7 via its G7.1ut Editor Librarian software. so you don't have to squint your eyes and control everything just on the pedalboard unless you prefer...

After once you're past your Zoom G7, you'd probably be hooked on the whole recording stuff to all the mixing stuff etc.
have a good read @ http://diy.blueprintstudios.org , it's heading to 7 years old, but the basics of all basics still applies.

this should get you started have fun
