Default [History] Recording Depeche Mode's People Are People in 1984

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb0...racks_0207.htm

"People are people" & "Master and Servant" still sound fresh to me; that's how forward thinking the arrangements were. Play them next to a 2006/7 song and they don't sound out of place at all. And they are 23 year old songs.

Try playing a 1961 (23 years from 1984, but in the opposite direction) sound next to them and you'll understand what I mean.

note: I am not commenting on the sound quality but on the quality of the arrangement.

uh... i dunno but whenever i hear early DM it always reminds me of the 80s, so its not as timeless to me as it is to you.

Depeche Mode is one of my fav bands..People Are People is a very unique song..I love the intro, with all tat weird synth percussion..its a shame today`s music cant be compared to the ones made 23 years ago..their songs still sound fresh as they did back then when they were 1st made..: )

lowjk, that was the era when keyboardist really create amazing tunes. loads of complicated hardware - synth, samplers, drum machine, production techniques ...

also, people were happier then. ha.ha... coz the market then was for disco dancing.

Had Your Howard Jones Today?

Watch the DVD clip in this remaster CD,
it talks about how DM wanted 'People are people'
to sounds poppy and the next single 'Master and Servant'
to sound more experimental to let the audience know
what Depeche Mode is all about.

Master and Servant took a
couple of weeks to record and finish,
it was the difficult record.
There is a missing snare towards the end of song,
lost during the mix down.

Bro RR bro, I agree with you on the early stuff; it's the reverb-ed drums I swear!!!

But fucken hell, the Music For Masses and Violater albums are classic and those still sound damn good!!!
