Contrary to popular belief, the local music scene has a very wide range of performers and events.
Singapore is never short of a show every night of the week, with offerings from dodgy bar bands to haute Jazz singers, to Hardcore gigs in cramped claustrophobic studios to the annual Metalfests held in spacious community centres,
Recent times have seen an increasing interest in the local music performance industry, with organisers being more creative in their publicity and getting a larger segment of the audience to pay attention. This is so for every ‘scene’ (for lack of a better word). There was mindseye’s extensive posters and promotions for the Singapore Battle of the Bands 2004. There was also all that publicity for the Extreme Metal gigs (which worked, albeit being so annoying). Aging Youth also offered Monday night performances at Bar None, with flyer distribution as well as contacting relevant websites.
What the mainstream media now allows is an avenue to grab the attention of the public. Singapore has had Womad, Mosaic and Baybeats to boast of, with large turnouts and good reviews. Throngs came to support the festivals because of the experience offered. So the question is, what was it about the festivals that drew the crowd even prior to the event?
This issue isn’t just a commercial one, bands wanting to perform and potential organisers should take note…If anything was possible, how would you like to be heard?
