basic signal flow as blueprinet pointed out is the most important to remember...dont be fooled tho...sounds easy but recording can be a daunting process...mic techniques, recording techniques(post or pre dynamics eg. compression,eq),live to 2 track, multitracking and many many more plays a part..even if you feel its role is small..the effects of digital distortion, dithering, oversampling and many many more since digital is the way now...
how well you can handle your sequencer(DAW) plays a major role too...
recording is the 1st step and the most important before anything else...mixdown and mastering...so if your source is good...the rest will flow smoothly...

I studied these things so its handy for me....able to learn so much in so little time...but of cos..we are all learning new things everyday...
most importantly...as long as the passion and interest is in you...fooohhh...i tell you.....happening!!! heh

skrillaz : ah yes. actually, I feel recording/mixing process is as simple as how you want it to be. if I were to do a simple bedroom recording, and i wanna do a simple raw mix. recording is actually simple. however once you've done with "simple" process, naturally you wanna take your challenge up to another level (if you got the passion), then you wanna record with more complexity and inject more experience like acoustics / good mic placement that naturally "gates" bleeds etc. Mixing will no longer about just "balancing volume levels and make everything audible". all that basic compression/gating/EQ/Reverb will kick in. then to the more advanced side of multiband dynamic compression/eq etc. and the list goes on. and I wouldn't cover all that because the world out there on google.com have links to international forums filled with ppl who know their thing really really well.

so feel free to join in the fun for all you guys who're starting/into audio.

hey ron. got a question.
do u eq before compress or compress before eq
cos after compress the track becomes louder & theres change in tone. cos theres difference listening a track in low vol and high vol.

sef : i sorta do both dude. eq , compress and eq again or compress eq then compress again. there's a thing called "multiband compression" which lets you manipulate (eq/compress) at the same time.there's no limits to this mixing stuff.

hey ron. with so many local bands recorded their albums & EPs. which band's album u think is the best? in terms of the mixing, recording, post production & sound quality.

1-Audio engineers/producers
2-Band members
3-Normal consumers.


if a cd is out :

1-not good, should EQ more lows at 80-200hz and the there's no highs, the guitars are too sharp, around 14khz etc etc
2-drummer says : drums should be louder. guitarist say : guitars should be louder, bass say : should be more bass. vocalist say = should turn down all the drums/guitar/bass.keep the vocals upfront.
3-the band is great! the songs are catchy!

there's no best , i've heard shit recordings with killer bands and I've heard killer recordings with shit bands. and when it came to the killer band and the killer recordings coming together : not my type of genre. don't appreciate.
