how can you learn to play jazz? i mean, it's one thing finding a good teacher (who?), and another finding a dedicated jazz band who will accept a player just starting on jazz... it's not like jazz is something that can be learnt that easily by listening to cds or anything.
so... for those jazz players out there - how did you do it?
I'll try to help my fellow drummer. actually I am learning jazz too. Jazz are played in triplet...So you could count (anyhow as long there's three) :
One Two Three, Two Two Three, Three Two Three, Four Two Three
and play on the ride as (1 means you play,0 means zero la, no need to play):
1 0 0, 1 0 1, 1 0 0, 1 0 1,
Then play the hihat with your left leg (you know what I mean) (right handed setup) on 2 and 4 e.g:
0 0 0, 1 0 0, 0 0 0, 1 0 0
after you master this rudiment. then you can tap the snare and the bass drum in any rudiments you want to. The basic is to stick to that basic ride and hi-hat pattern. give it a try. And another tip. You must paly Ride as the loudest instrument followed by hi-hat, snare and lastly bass drum. it's different that ROCK. Practice
Cheers
hey u try to to get some books for beginners jazz drumming, i think swee lee bras brasah got sell, think ive saw it before sometime back. It teaches u basic grooves and some fills, complimented with a cd
To learn further than that i guess hiring a teacher would be better.
i guess one big point i would be looking for would be experiences eg. how you got into jazz, the jazz scene, your band etc, how you learnt jazz.
the jazz teacher part would be quite nice as well!
and for southbridge, what time does the band start playing? do you need to buy a drink or can you just go and watch?
Most jazz is NOT played in triplets. The most fundamental part about jazz is the "swing" element, which is basically emphasis on counts 2 and 4 as opposed to pop/rock, which emphasises 1 and 3. :?

THANKS!
I started learning how to play jazz by reading up about jazz and learning from John Riley's books. Also, I listen to alot of jazz records, especially Oscar Peterson Trio. Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen was swinging their ass off, and Oscar Peterson was just magical! I play to their recordings alot (wished I have the chance now) to learn how to swing.
I took every chance to see good jazz musicians play, and learn from them. I also drop by Blue Note to just jam with the musicians to learn how to play the music with others. I have not done it for very long time though.
I'm also working together with a few guys in a jazz context. It's a good thing that one of us plays in Thomson Big Band.
