Default Free Rudimental Workshop Club?

Hi All,

I have read many times on this forum and other forums where newbies have found it hard to afford lessons. This has been in my thoughts for a really long time now since it was a problem I once faced when I was starting out. But I was so blessed to have met one of my first teachers Gordon Jansen (years back), who would sometimes teach me for free (calling me and making sure I came for lessons knowing I have no money). This motivated me in so many ways and I would really love to pass his tradition down.

I have recently spoken to him via email after years of not seeing each other (he is now based in Perth). I was so inspired to hear that he is still teaching and conducting free workshops to fellow enthusiasts. Thus I came up with this:-

I would love to start a small club offering free monthly meet-ups to conduct rudimental workshops dealing with hand technique and possibly feet technique too (for now). I will cover in-depth and give as much personal training time to those in the meet-up within the time available.

However, there are some criteria:-

1) The meet-ups are for people who are beginners/semi beginners. Those who are already attending regular classes with other teachers will not be accepted. I will conduct interviews/auditions personally.

2) This will extend to only the low income group. Proof of address will be required and I will only accept dwellers in 3 room flats and below. I have already done my research using The Music Lab's data base to come up with this.

3) Practice is required!! Since spaces will be limited for a period of time, I would like to have drummers who are sincere about learning. I will set goals in every workshop and drummers who do not meet the goals will be dropped. Of course, goals will be VERY reasonable. The meet-up is for the purpose of motivating, helping some to realize dreams and help some discover their gifts etc. So, the environment will be pretty relaxed and fun but at the same time serious with what we'll be doing or exploring together.

Now the question is:-

Anyone interested??

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies. I know the 3 room flat criteria is not fool-proof, but after surveying the labs student base, only under 2% of the students live in 3 room flats. So we just have to work with the bigger majority (I actually know a guy who drives a 850K ferrari and lives in a 3 room flat at bukit batok!!).

But for those who lives in 4 room flats, you can still write in to me and explain your situation. I will look through it still for sure.

Wow, you're doing really good work here. Not just drummers without lessons, but I think drummers in general really need rudimental training a lot!

Bravo - Well done ! Alvin ! I wish I could join in as well but I doubt I will qualify. I used to do something like that a few years back with something I am good at and it is really gratifying to see the juniors I have trained become good at it.

Bravo, again !!!

Thanks for all your support! Will do my best but whether it will truly benefit anyone at all, that will need at least 6 months to tell. But if we don't try we won't know ya?

Ok. Now that we have some positive opinions already, I will start accepting sign-ups. I already have some PMs, but please do email me at alvintan@themusiclab.com.sg for those that are interested.

Cheers!!

Very noble thing you're doing Alvin. Giving back what you have gained is such a great thing.

I believe everyone in this world deserves to receive any form of education, as long as they are willing to put in effort.

I sincerely hope this benefit will reach out to those who really need it. Like those who have difficulty to buy even a new pair of drumsticks but really love to drum. They deserve to get this opportunity.

All the best Alvin!
