Default Zoom H2 microphone modification

Listening to soundrecordings made in the 360 degree surround pattern mode of the Zoom H2,
I found out that the directional sensitivity is bad. Even the stereo recording sounds mono.
The front/back channel separation is the same story.
So I had to turn the microphones in 4 times 90 degree. With 2 crossed disk's on top of the H2,
the directional resolution is now much better. The instruction video you can find on:
http://www.vimeo.com/1814673 or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoXxJuPRBrQ
Maybe there are other ways to get better results; this is one. I hope to have some discussion
with other H2 owners about this theme.

It's starting to look like a jeklin disk gone wrong. Usually for that kind of arrangement, the elements are 6-8 inches aparat....about the width of your skull, and they use omni's not cardiods.

I think you will end up with a hole in the middle of your stereo image using that arrangement. You might do better to swap out the cardiods for omni capsules. I imagine there might be some frequency response issues with the partial blocking of the existing capsules back ports.

You might like to try implementing a MS array instead. There is probably room for both setups and a switch to toggle.

Another idea is to arrange the cardiods in a tetragon for ambisonics.

I've found the stereo imaging from the rear ports to be quite nice and spacious. I've built some ghetto binaural mics which produce a very different image.
