Default Sound device for recording???

Hi...

I'm looking for a really good sound recording device to record direct through a mic without using a mixer... I'm new at this so forgive me if it's a stupid question.

I've got a Sony IC recorder that doesn't seem to have a good sound quality after encoding into the computer. So far the best sounds I get are from a Canon videocam recording from a Sony condenser mic but it's a hassle to encode the video back to mp3 then to a recording software. The mic has so far produced good sounds considering it's through a camcorder.

Is there a recording device which is not huge which can give me the kinda sound I want? Price range around $1k.

There's your answer as to why the sound quality for video cam sounds better. It's not what you recorded it into, it's what you recorded it with.

Firstly..

What is the source of audio? is it mainly for vocal/singing/voice over? Looking on your situation perhaps you want to do voice over? I could be wrong. But here's some option if you want to record directly to computer without using interface...

USB microphone is the easiest way to go..Just plug on USB port and you are good to go. Mind you that the quality is limited to the spec. But this is the wisest way to learn recording without heavy investment.

If you want to do recording with professional result, there's some equipment needed. What you need is, a good audio converter/interface (price are varies), good microphone, and speakers.

For 1k, you can build decent recording setup, depends on what your needs...

Get a Zoom H2/H4. They come with pretty decent built-in mics. If you wanna use better mics, just get the H4 and get any decent condenser mic like the AT2020 or Rodes. Will cost way below your 1k budget.

Hi ungauged,

Perhaps the KORG MR series might interest you. This series of recorders are the one and only kind in the market that can record at the highest quality of 1 Bit, 5.6mHz format. The recorders are also within your price range of $1k odd. Feel free to drop by our showroom for a quick run down on the MR series, as well as the ZOOM H2/H4 Handy Recorders. Cheers!
