Default Recording Setup

Hi,

i am going to purchase some gears for recording guitars.

any idea where can i get the senhiser e609 mics?

is the m-audio dmp3 a good preamp?

i dont need too many inputs, just 2 will do.

should i get one with analog outs
or a fireware interface? if so, what do you guys recommend?

currently, i have an EMU1212m sound card with Rokit RP5 monitor speakers.

would need to get an interface with mic preamps, plus maybe 1 or 2 mics for miking my 2x12 cabinet.

One more thing thou,
do you guys work on a 64bit operating system?

I currently have Vista x64 installed.
my emu1212m card doesnt seem to have output/inputs for any sound in the application. im using cakewalk producer 7.02

should i go back to vista 32bit? but on the other hand i have 4 gigs of ram installed and it might not be utilized.

thanks =)

what is your budget?

i would prefer an SM57 anytime anyday for recording guitar. and saved up for a ribbon mic to another kind of colour. (crowley and tripp naked eye roswelitte) is good. and look towards Royer Labs ones.

m-audio dmp3 is okay if your elementry... but if you want a lush thick sound you might want to search for alternatives. For guitars, i suggest the chandler germanium . I heard one of those before. It really gives the guitars alot of tone and vibe.

64bit is okay on most DAW nowadays. yep.

i would second the SM57 anyday over the 609s. The e906 has received very good reviews as well. apparently the successor to the 609. but starting out and with ur budget, the 57 placed correctly will give u very satisfying results.

i don't know about the dmp3. am using the studio projects vtb1 and for a budget preamp, i am very happy with it. i leave the tube blend option out when recording guitars. and its pretty cheap at SGD$210. it imparts a diff flavour to the sound. i don't know about good preamp. i have never owned nor heard any of the elite pres so i wouldn't have anythign to compare with. with my limited knowledge and budget, the VTB1 is very satisfactory.

I believe with a dmp3 or vtb1 and emu card, u r set to go for recording ur guitars. just get a 57 and experiment with positioning it. thats what i do and its been great thus far, with some tweaking in sonar...

well, thank you guys for the insight.

fibredrive: may i know where did you purchase your vtb1 from?

Im thinking of purchasing two microphones, perhaps 1 sm57 and one e906?
and by the way, where can i buy senhiser mics?

i would be recording heavily distorted guitar sounds and clean guitar sounds.

i was thinking of the ehx 12ay7, presonus firebox or maudio firewire solo (i suppose they are readily available locally) , does anyone have any experiences with these mic pres?

bought it direct from local dealer. think he might still have 1 or 2 pieces left. name is david sim. his contact is 9003-8877. very nice chap.

as for senn mics, try Team108 (6748-9333) or Hung Bros (6336-9989) at sim lim 3rd floor.

sorry i don't have any experiences with the pres on the audio interfaces u mentioned. but since u already have an EMU 1212M which have pretty good converters i think, u could continue using that. all you need is a preamp for your mics. hook up your '57 to the vtb1 or dmp3, then to the emu and u r ready to rock!

cheers

Wow....comparing m-audio with germanium?
Did you own one? or try it?

MBOX Pro + SM57 will make you happy.
But I found Amplitube and other simulation soft/plugins getting better.

I prefer to record DRY to DAW, Plug the Amplitube (or whatever), Record your ideas to the DAW and if you satisfied with your playing and want it so bad to use it on MASTER tracks. Then you always able to RE-AMP it to whatever AMP you like without PLAYING it AGAIN.

Out you GTR tracks to a re-amp box. You may check LittleLabs. re-Amp box goes to AMP input. If you like, you can add your StompBoxes/FXs in the line.

And if you have enough luck, you may micing with this setup :
Closed Micing :
1. Royerlabs + AEA + SM57
Room Micing (if needed)
2. Any Ribbon Mic

Drive the mics :
1. Any Ribbon Mics to germanium preamp or OLD neve preamp
2. SM57 to OLD NEVE, 9081 or portico will be ok.

But it's fine if only 57, run to BEST mic preamp available!!

The secret weapon of recording is good ol shure SM57 with Preamps. Can be on board or dedicated preamp. Play around with it..learn the tools and technique.

Here's what I suggest in particular order
1. Buy 1 or 2 SM57
2. Buy good Converter . M-Audio/Presonus will do. If you have desktop Computer I suggest PCI/E Based Audio Card rather than Firewire or USB. Echo Mia is one of the decent PCI based. But if you go with this you need dedicated Preamp. SP VTB would be fine..Change the tubes with JJ tubes.
3. Tweak your PC to handle audio. Trash the software that you don't need

If you have budget to spend..don't go cheap..buy the best and get the best..Here's what I propose in case you are interested
1. Lynx Two Card/Lynx L22
2. Chandler Germanium or Great River ME-1NV
3. SM-57 and Royer labs or AEA.

Happy recording
