I'm thinking of getting a synth to teach myself. I don't have any musical backgound on pop pianos etc. I'm thinking of getting lessons soon perhaps. My budget is around sgd 500. Can anyone recommend a good synth that I can play electronic and trance with? I am quite comfortable with programming etc. So I prefer one that can sync up well with my PC.
what type of synth are you looking for? those rompler ones? or those tweaking ones? oh well, I would advise you to get a usb midi keyboard, link up to your laptop or com and play with softsynth.
I think I would prefer the tweaking kind. I just read that the romplers aren't that flexible rite? Basically, I would prefer to create loops and arpegiators and stuff. Any synths to recommend?
for the budget, imho, i have to agree with alshit, get midi controller and go the software way. Theres are so many things to tweak/control/manipulate(within softsynth, soft sampler etc) that most prolly will be tweaking too much and easily forget bout making music..
anyway, for software, propellerhead reason is cool, can do what you wanna, can tweak/combine/manipulate/arppegiate the various synths in the programme till cow dont come home and much much more.. And the price is a lil "plus more" round the budget you have stated..
add in another 2-300 plus for a basic 49/61 keys midi controller(or more for a controller with fancy knobs, pad, sliders, buttons etc where you can mapped the software parameters to be controlled from the hardware midi controller itself) shoud be good to go
Thanks for replying..I like that tweak till the cows dun come home LMAO I looked at the Reason s/w. Seems kinda interesting. I checked out this other guy who synced up his Yamaha mo6 with Cubase. Which seemed kinda fun.
So I can juz hook up a "basic 49/61 keys midi controller". Where do I get these controllers. The reason why I'd prefer a synthesizer over the midi controller is coz e keys are larger.
can try sinamex for m audio, novation, akai, city music for korg etc. Sometime theres also lobangs round the keyboard/soundgear classified section
For the spec of the midi controllers from various brand, do check out their sites for more info. Theres some other brands available locally and theres some threads on it as well, you might like to check/search round the keyboard forums here
Another reason to get reason is because when you press the tab key, it will show you the routing signal chain of your virtual equipments very realistically, thus I feel that its really good for the learning and understanding of how to patch your stuffs together. The softsynths that comes with it are pretty nice, quite a few synthesis for you to learn. It really a good package to get you started. The only downside I can think of is that Reason don't use VST but that doesn't makes it inflexible, overall it rather personal choices.
You can get the controllers at Citymusic, Sinemax or Resolution. Or if you already have a keyboard, you can make use of its midi out by getting a midi to usb cable to connect it to your laptop and use it as midi device.
The Korg Prophecy is one of it's kind keyboard. Not many synthersizer has this much real time control. When it was new, it cost around $1k. You should be able to get a used one at much lower price.
Another old synth you should check out for inspiration is the Korg Wavestation.
I have a korg prophecy like in that first video...they are very difficult to program, they don't tempo sync on the lfo's, the arpegiator doesn't midi out and they are monophonic/mono timbral. They do sound awesome though.
That second video had pretty standard general midi sounds. There is a triton le going cheap in the keyboard buy/sell that would be ideal for tarnce. If I were you I'd buy that.
