There are many different types of VSTis. What type of sound are you looking for? You mentioned two - Poizone is a subtractive synth while FM8 uses FM synthesis. Arturia has lots of analog synths - Analog Factory being one of the more popular buys as it encompasses a little of everything from Modular Moog, Minimoog, Jupiter etc. Others like the upcoming Omnisphere from Spectrasonics mixes different synthesis.

Crystal VST is one of the more popular free VST. (http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/)

You can run any VSTi plugin "standalone" using a light weight VST host like...

http://www.energy-xt.com/

there are some freeware ones too..

For a subtractive and FM synth VSTi try ..

Oh, forgot you want standalone. Some of the ones I mentioned are standalones while others are plugins.

By the way, Emu, in anticipation of their new X3 sampler, is now giving out the free Proteus Vx as a download. It works as a VSTi and standalone. Just need to subscribe to their newsletter. http://www.emu.com/promo/proteusvx/welcome.asp
