that's probably the sound of teh strings hitting the frets. The compressor just made it softer.

if you don't like it, you could raise the string action. or, you could just play softer.

1) Your neck could be too straight
2) Your action could be too low

Do some tweaking and you will be fine. Good luck

does all your basses sounded the same? does this happens before? did all your basses profesionally set-up?

if yes could be the amp. happen to me when i play a bit too loud on the amp. the percussive sound the amp can't take it its a 15watt. so i change to a 100watt ;p

hahaha , i think i solve the problem . I lowered the pickups height . oh yah will the height of the pups affect the sound produced ?? Man i am so tempted to change the stock pups on my stingray to a nordy or a delano . =D

yes it will, the tonal quality and volume will change. btw: the piak sound could come from the strings hitting the pickup (try pushing your string until it touches the pup, you should get a piak tiak kind of sound too)!

"piak piak" sounds plain wrong

it's important to know WHY the problem occured. if your pickups are high, your bass will sound louder. too high, it will get muddy. pickup height is a matter of finding a sweet spot rather than setting it to your preferences.

what lordie said gives us a clue of what could be happening

the "piak piak" sound is the sound of your speaker crackling (or amp distorting. either way is bad). any more "piak piak" and your speaker (or amp) will eventually get damaged.

what is power rating of your cab?
