thats a very wide budget there

for 500 or 600 maybe you can get a good ibanez or squier. depending on whether you want a modern or classic tone.

i'm not big on yamahas, especially on smaller budgets

4 or 5-string?

you can't really go wrong with the yamaha bb series... but you might like the ibanez srx series too. not sure how much those are though, but there's one in the classifieds for 600.

you could wait around for a jazz bass to pop up.. fernandes, tokai/greco are pretty good basses for the money.

one thing though.. i think most of sakurai's tone comes from his amp, or at the very least his bass preamp. that's something you're not likely to get at your current price range, but any of the above suggestions will put you somewhere in the region of what he sounds like as long as you eq yourself properly, especially the jazzes.

as always- try before you buy, or at least know what you're buying

Sakurai? I think you'll come closer to it with a Yamaha than with an Ibanez..

Yah, I'm not a big fan of yamaha too...

unless you get the TRB series..hahaha! =)

Squier or ibanez would be good.

I'm never quite a big fan of ibanez since they no longer make basses like they did during the glory years of the 90s. At that time, ibanez was quite the boutique bass maker. However, I feel that you will like the BTB200 more than any entry-level yamahas. 24 frets and a 35 scale neck should allow you a wide range sonically. Most of all, have fun with your bass regardless of what you get.

along the way, there's an obvious shift in the company's commercial ideals, ardent fans like us regret their every move of course.

nevertheless, the current SR basses are replicating the slimmer neck profiles of the '80s as this era of ibanez guitars/ basses were the epitome of the company's craftsmanship.
