save up to around 600-800 then during sweelee sale go buy their basses at half price.
would recommend cort basses though,
at the same price as epi thunderbird, u sort of get "more" tonal control.
depends on what you want actually.

as for the amps i'm nt sure.
get a decent one!?!?
( i'm still in the process of getting a good amp, haha)

just my thoughts though, haha

hey, you may wanna get the ibanez model at swee lee for $500.
it looks nice and tempting.
if you keep playing the bass, and when you get better, you may not need to switch to a new bass.
the ibanez comes one set with amps and tuners.

no to the Epi Thunderbird. tone's too muddy, not versatile, neck dives before you can even grab the neck.

invest in a better bass instead of getting the starter packs. from what i've heard, they sound like crap.

try Ibanez or Yamaha. you can get a cheap second hand Fender with that kind of money.

about pickups:

SX jazz. Fairly versatile, but with a few modifications you'll have a bass that you can keep for life. Cheap too!

I observe that you're kinda picky about the brand, so I guess investing up to 800-1000 for a Japan Fender would suit you well. There's nothing more recognizable than a Fender!
