any idea how to get the bass tone of paul mccartneys " while my guitar gently weeps"

I dont play bass often but the beatles' song while my guitar gently weeps has the most interesting bass tone i've heard. it reminds me of duff mckagan's playing with guns n roses and velvet revolver. but paul's tone has more punch in it. i have a gibson thunderbird and i cant get anywhere near that sound. maybe its paul's viola bass or something.
