wat happens when i remove my strings for more than a week

hey guys,

i just wana know if neck warping would occur if i remove my strings of my bass for more than a week. and would anything else serious happen to my bass?

It shouldn't. As far as I know, the only reason for warped necks is poorly cut wood. There's very little we can do physically to warp a neck.

Come on guys... lets use a little common sense here.
Why would something will happen to necks that aren't strung up? You mean when necks are made, something magical happens to that piece of wood for it to suddenly want to warp? No right?

Agree with Cherns here. I mean, you see shops like Guitar Connection selling necks without tuners and strings. If the lack of string tension will cause a neck to warp, nobody will buy those necks.

Although if you remove the strings you should loosen the truss rod to release the tension originally there to conteract the string tension. Can somebody correct me on this if I'm wrong?

If you remove the strings, the only thing that will happen is that the neck will bow in the opposite direction because there's no more tension from the strings. That won't damage your bass in any way... at least in the short term.

However, if you're going to leave it in storage for a few months, then you will be better off loosening the trussrod. If anything, it'll give you a peace of mind.

nah.. u just will have no bass to play with for more than a week =P that's if u have only 1 bass like me =]

If you remove the strings for 1 week

the strings will relax
and will sound more relax the next time your string them up

Strings that are always strung up will have stretched
stretching makes them thinner ( diameter ) and thus sounding thinner too.
Due to having a chance to be at rest
the cell molecular structure of the strings would have a chance to reorientate
into a less stretched position
and your tone should then be thicker
until the strings stretch again : )

I thought you were going to say that relaxed strings will help you play better, compared to stressed strings that have been put to work non-stop

Very true. A relaxed string is a happy string. That being said, the neck will be sad and lonely cos the strings are not around to accompany it. Thus it will lead to neck warp cos being lonely for a week does make you pretty warped.
