Get the universally used, Shure sm57 or sm58.

Actually, overpowering other instruments or improper sound balancing is usually the "fault" of the sound engineer controlling the sound board..

However if you are looking for a good vocal mic for live situation, do consider the Shure Beta 87... And if you got extra dough to burn, consider the Shure KSM9...

I would second the recommendation for the Shure Beta 57 for female vocals. You should be able to track that mic down in Singapore, but it will probably cost in SG600+ range. Good mics rarely come cheap and you generally get what you pay for.

But as a first step, you should consider using whatever mic you already have (or the house provides) and spending some time working with the sound engineer to improve the EQ through the board. A good sound engineer can cover up a lot of poor hardware sins if he's able to dial in a good mix.

What other kind of instruments / musicians will you be playing with?

Samson CL8 is really high in quality and probably most durable
Sennheiser E602 is alternative to that , do check them out.

Just one word:

SENNHEISER

I have a mic from the Sennheiser chordless series & though it was pricey, i find that it's amazing & it was well worth the money spent.

Since the time i first sang into a Sennheiser on stage, I've never used any other brand of vocal microphone.
