I strongly encourage taking formal lessons, especially for starters.
Imo, having someone to teach/educate/guide/inspire helps bring one in the right direction and fuels his motivation to become better. Once the right foundations are laid, he/she then has the option to carry on taking more lessons or be on his/her own.
Bad techniques and habits are a headache to correct when you get too used to it. It's somewhat a very irritating and tiresome process.
Ps. and it should be cheaper than buying PS3 and the controllers for rock band. :mrgreen:
