I'm guessing that a possible reason for the design for the 4 additional strings tuned at the bottom with the string balls strung through the middle of the BC Bich is to allow a player to do away with using the extra 4 strings if they wanted and to play it as a 6 string.

his way, they wouldn't have to deal with the awkwardness of 4 empty tuners on the headstock.
